The Don Greenawalt award is annually presented to one individual who demonstrates leadership and dedication to the organization. This award is an honor and a privilege because it is voted on by the peers of Hopewell Youth Baseball.
For over 30 years, Don Greenawalt worked with the Hopewell youth and promoted Hopewell Little League and baseball programs. He was an active member of the Hopewell Little League since its inception in 1958 and served as its original President. Throughout his tenure, Mr. Greenawalt served as Director, Secretary, Player Agent and Manager. Mr. Greenawalt’s involvement was not limited to the time that either of his sons played in the Hopewell Little League. In fact, at least a third of his many years in the organization were spent when neither of his sons played at that level. Mr. Greenawalt also helped to design and build the original baseball fields located at Kane Road Elementary and the Hopewell Junior High School.
In 1968, he organized and started the first girls’ softball league in Hopewell. For all of his efforts, dedication and time, Mr. Greenawalt was awarded the 1970 Sportsman of the Year by the Greater Aliquippa Chamber of Commerce. In 1978, Mr. Greenawalt was also awarded the Sports Honor Award by the Hopewell Area Boys Baseball League for his unselfish service to the youth of the Hopewell Township Area. Don served as an assistant American Legion coach under Joe Colella’s Hopewell teams in the mid 1980’s. Mr. Greenawalt also led the committee to name the baseball field after Coach Colella. Sadly, Don passed away in 2009 at the age of 81. Mr. Greenawalt loved baseball. Not only for the game, itself, but also as a way to reach kids, to start and build a rapport with them and to promote a sport that could teach them how to become a better person.
